Mead… the sacred drink of men and gods alike, brewed from honey believed to have descended from the Heavens as dew then gathered in by bees. With hints of berries, pears, apples and grassy fields, Mead is the ancient drink of kings and poets – ascribed with bringing poetry, virility and wit. The gods, from Mount Olympus to Valhalla, were believed to drink mead – garnering from it strength, poetry and passion.
Mead, or honeywine, is an ancient form of winemaking, with roots throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. Our goal at Sky River Mead is to reintroduce the world to exquisite mead and honey wine, all while making them more approachable and food friendly.
From ancient cultures on distant shores, shrouded in mist, Sky River brings the age-old art of making mead into the twenty-first century to create a new tradition. Sky River Meads, lighter and dryer than their ancient counterparts, balance beautifully with the foods of today, from around the world – curries and chutneys, salsa’s and ginger.
Sky River Meadery is a woman-owned Washington winery and is proud to be among the older wineries in state. It began in 1997 nestled in the rugged foothills of Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountain Range and released her first wines in 1999. In 2012 we packed up our honey and moved to the Woodinville Winery District where we’ve been able to add a tasting room, an event space with artist gallery space, a patio area to enjoy the view with a delicious glass of mead, an expansive picnic area, and evolving gardens with bee hives on display.
The finest Washington Honey is selected for Sky River Mead, as well as the finest Washington fruit for our Raspberry and Blackberry Honeywine. We welcome you to learn more about our Mead and Honeywine selections.
